There is a remote observation point on Mt. St. Helens called Windy Ridge. Sometimes called the back route, this scenic byway is seldom used by tourists but has more attractions and history than the other route. Stops in the destruction zone, Spirit Lake and the wrecked miner’s car are just a few examples.
After lunch at the Tall Timber Café we walk across Hwy 12 to the Gifford Pinchot Ranger Station for maps and information. From there we head south on forest roads for the next 45 miles (about 45 minutes without stops). It’s paved but winding and slow.
It’s awesome driving through an area called the “Kill Zone” where there is complete devastation, trees turned over like match sticks, and then there is Spirit Lake with several drive outs and overlooks.
Along the way are plenty of viewpoints for Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams and Mt. Hood in addition to Mt St. Helens. Bring sunglasses and a jacket because we will be above 5000 feet at Windy Ridge.
